The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project works to improve flood works risks and solid waste management in the Lafa River Basin in the Odaw Catchment Area. The project is also to improve access to basic infrastructure and services in the targeted flood-prone low-income communities in the Greater Accra Region.
By the mandate of the Environmental Health and Sanitation office of the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly in collaboration with other Departments /Units, a clean-up exercise and behavioral change campaigns were organized to reduce the level of silt and waste from the Municipality into the Lafa River.
In line with the above, on the 3rd of February 2024, some officials of the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly embarked on a clean-up exercise at Kwashiebu with the aim of desilting waste accumulation that normally finds its way into the Lafa River. The Assembly in the course of the survey would report on limited and low-capacity rains, heavy silting and waste accumulation, and poor drainage in built-up areas.
In Attendance were the Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma North, Hon Kofi Ofori, some Honorable Assembly Members, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Officials from the Environmental and Waste Management Unit, and staff of the Municipal Assembly.
Addressing some residents of Kwashiebu, Hon Kofi Ofori said was the Assembly’s core mandate to create awareness on the issues stated above, especially to prevent community members from dumping waste into drains, watercourses, and streams or on illegal dumpsites and to manage waste which causes higher flooding.
To sensitize most community members within Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly to register with accredited waste collection services contractors for effective waste collection and disposal to ensure that Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly becomes the cleanest Assembly in the Greater Accra Region.
