The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly, with support from GARID, recently organized a large-scale cleanup campaign. Spearheaded by the Municipal Environment Health Office and in collaboration with Mr. Bunyaminu Salahu Maikankan, the assembly member for Darkuman West electoral area, residents joined forces to tackle the pressing environmental challenges.
Participants diligently cleared debris, unclogged drains, and removed waste from gutter edges, all aimed at minimizing the risk of flooding during the rainy season. Madam Mary Biamah, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, emphasized the critical importance of such initiatives in safeguarding the community against flooding incidents. She highlighted the vulnerability of low-lying areas like Accra, including Ablekuma North, and underscored the need for regular maintenance of drainage systems to prevent flooding.
Under the GARID project, the assembly has been equipped with the necessary tools and resources to effectively manage environmental challenges. Desilting drains and gutters not only ensures smooth water flow but also significantly reduces the likelihood of flooding. Prior to the cleanup exercise, extensive awareness campaigns were conducted to mobilize community participation, with non-compliant residents facing legal repercussions.
Looking ahead, Madam Mary Biamah outlined plans for monthly cleanup drives to cover a wider area and mitigate flooding risks. She urged residents to engage accredited waste management services for proper disposal, emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining a clean environment. Additionally, ongoing efforts to expand and improve drainage systems aim to further alleviate flooding concerns.
Mr. Bunyaminu Salahu Maikankan reiterated the commitment of his office to monitor sanitation practices and organize regular cleanup activities. He lamented the inadequate drainage infrastructure in the area, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to preserve the environment for future generations.
