The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the Awoshie electoral area office led by Madam Faustina Kessewaa, recently spearheaded a large-scale cleanup initiative in Awoshie and its vicinity within the Greater Accra Region. This collaborative effort aimed to tackle various sanitation challenges, including rubbish clearance, drain desilting, and refuse removal along gutter edges, all in a bid to preempt flooding incidents ahead of the rainy season and in line with the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID) objectives.
Madam Mary Biamah, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer (MEHO), stressed the crucial role of such activities in mitigating flooding risks, particularly in low-lying areas like Accra and Ablekuma North. She underscored the support received under the GARID project, providing essential tools and equipment for effective execution. Regular drain desilting efforts were emphasized to ensure unobstructed water flow during rainfall, thus reducing the vulnerability to flooding.
Preceding the cleanup drive, thorough sensitization efforts were made to inform residents, with non-compliant individuals facing potential prosecution. The MEHO emphasized the need for monthly clean-up campaigns to cover broader areas and minimize flooding risks. She also encouraged households to engage accredited waste management services for proper disposal while outlining gradual plans to expand gutters and drains to further enhance flood mitigation measures.
Madam Faustina Kessewaa the assembly member, reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing sanitation monitoring and regular clean-up initiatives in support of the overarching objectives. She voiced concerns regarding the area's inadequate drainage system and reiterated their dedication to environmental improvement endeavors.
